Designed backwards from the target.

Most loudspeakers are designed and then measured. Matterhorn starts from the performance a finished room has to demonstrate, and works back to the drive units and cabinet needed to get there with margin in hand.

It is an unglamorous way to design a loudspeaker. It is also the only way to promise a client a number and then measure it on handover.


Reference level is defined at the seat, not at the loudspeaker.

That single detail separates a cinema loudspeaker from a domestic one, and it is where most well-regarded speakers quietly come undone.

Move the seats further back and the loudspeaker has to work considerably harder to deliver the same level at the seat. Enlarge the room and it has to work harder again to pressurise the extra volume. Put it behind an acoustically transparent screen, which costs a little more output still, and the margin that looked comfortable on a specification sheet is gone.

A speaker built around five- and six-inch drivers can reach reference in a small room and be audibly straining in a large one — compressing on peaks, hardening on dialogue, losing exactly the effortlessness that makes a cinema convincing.

The approach

Four decisions that follow from it.

Radiating area, not amplifier power

A twelve-inch front channel and eighteen-inch subwoofers are cinema proportions rather than domestic ones. The purpose of that scale is not loudness — it is that the system reaches reference while working well within itself, so peaks land cleanly and the room still has headroom on the loudest scene of the film.

Controlled dispersion over on-axis flattery

RP-22 verifies performance across the seating area rather than at a single position. A speaker optimised for one measurement point can measure beautifully and still be tonally inconsistent three seats away. Coverage is designed for the seats that exist.

Sealed, across the range

Every Matterhorn is a sealed design. A sealed enclosure rolls off at 12 dB per octave against the 24 dB of a ported box, and it keeps loading the driver below that point instead of unloading it — so there is no frequency at which the cone is left unsupported and excursion runs away. There is no port to compress, chuff or resonate when the system is working hard, and room gain rises at roughly the rate the enclosure falls, so the room meets the rolloff instead of fighting it. The cost is efficiency in the bottom octave. We pay it in radiating area rather than pretending it is not there.

Voicing matched across roles

Screen channels, surrounds and subwoofers each carry their own target, and a system is only as good as the group that falls short. The range is voiced to match across all three roles so that sound moving around the room keeps a single character.


Parts

What the design is built from.

The drive units are sourced from European suppliers. The crossover uses passive components of the grade specified in loudspeakers costing considerably more — a crossover’s losses and its distortion live in those parts, and they are not where a cinema loudspeaker should be made cheaper.

Each crossover is assembled on a custom printed circuit board rather than wired by hand onto a tag board. The board is specified with twice the standard copper thickness, so the traces carry the current the low-frequency section draws without becoming part of the circuit themselves.

What RP-22 actually asks for.

CEDIA RP-22 is the recommended practice for verifying audio performance in a residential cinema. It does not describe equipment — it sets targets the finished room has to meet.

Each group of channels has an average level to hit and a peak it must reach without strain. Headroom is the part that catches speakers out: reaching the average is easy, holding the peaks cleanly is not. Screen channels are held to 85 dB average with 105 dB peaks; surrounds to 82 dB with 102 dB peaks; the subwoofer system to 95 dB with 115 dB peaks at 20 Hz.

The point of a standard is that someone can check. A room designed to RP-22 gives the client a number to hold us to, rather than an opinion to take on trust.
